{"id":38395,"date":"2025-02-17T15:23:21","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T20:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/?page_id=38395"},"modified":"2025-02-17T15:29:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T20:29:52","slug":"re-indexing-content-on-search-engines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/re-indexing-content-on-search-engines\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-indexing Content on Search Engines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Manually re-indexing website content can be useful when you&#8217;ve made important changes to your website \u2014 such as updating time-sensitive content, adding important new pages, or fixing technical issues \u2014 and you want search engines to reflect those changes in their results as soon as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not necessary to do this every time you edit your website, as search engines will automatically crawl and re-index your web content on an ongoing basis. However, it may take anywhere from 24 hours up to a few weeks between crawls. If time is of the essence, continue reading to learn how to request major search engines to re-crawl and re-index your website content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Google and Bing together represent the vast majority of inbound organic search traffic to NC State&#8217;s websites, this tutorial will cover those search engines. If you&#8217;d like to cover your bases with other search engines \u2014 such as Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, or Baidu \u2014&nbsp;please consult the documentation for those platforms. Consult your website&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/google-analytics-and-google-tag-manager-setup\/\">Google Analytics<\/a> data for more information about which search engines you should prioritize based on how much traffic they drive to your site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Re-indexing on Google<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, page re-indexing requests are managed through <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about\">Google Search Console<\/a>. Google Search Console is a free tool that helps website owners manage their site&#8217;s presence on Google. Google Search Console is a <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/build-your-site\/topics\/google-analytics-4\/\">recommended analytics tool<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/10737381?hl=en\">integrates with Google Analytics<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you already have Google Search Console set up: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\">Log in to Google Search Console here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. You will need to verify you are an owner of your site via one of the available verification methods when prompted. The easiest verification method \u2014&nbsp;and the one we recommend for most campus communicators \u2014&nbsp;is to log in via a Google account that has &#8220;edit&#8221; access to the Google Analytics account running on the website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve set up Google Search Console, it&#8217;s a good idea to go ahead and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/10737381?hl=en\">connect it to your Google Analytics account<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need assistance with this process, consult the technical administrator or team member responsible for managing your website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Re-indexing on Bing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, page re-indexing requests can be managed through<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/\"> Bing Webmaster Tools<\/a>. Bing Webmaster Tools is a free service that helps website owners manage their site&#8217;s presence on Bing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you already have Bing Webmaster Tools set up:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/\">Log in to Bing Webmaster Tools here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.
