It signals “this is something we’re known for” and gives visitors a quick path into that topic. For help deciding what belongs on your homepage, see Creating a Homepage.

When to use it

Use the Category Callout block when you want to:

Highlight an important topic on your homepage. For example, a “Research” callout that always links to your four newest research stories.

Show your unit’s news coverage. For example, a “Faculty in the News” callout that links to recent articles about your faculty on other news sites, using your In the News stories.

Choosing a category

Pick a category you add to often. The callout always shows the four newest stories. If the newest one is a year old, your homepage looks out of date. A category with a new story at least every month or two is a good fit.

Match your priorities. Choose topics tied to your unit’s goals or your audience’s interests, such as research, student success or community impact, rather than broad catch-all categories like “News.”

Use one or two per page. Several callouts in a row start to look like a list of links. If you need more, vary the page with other blocks between them.

When to use a different block

The Category Callout block always shows the newest stories as text links. If you want something different, try one of these:

To hand-pick the links, or show photos: use the Featured Content Block. You choose each item, and each can have an image.

To hand-pick stories with photos on a news homepage: use the HP Story Listing block.

To show a longer, automatic list of stories with photos: use the Posts Feed block.

Before you start

The Category Callout block needs the NC State Pro Add-on.

It’s part of the Storytelling Feature Pack. If you can’t find it in the editor, ask your site administrator to turn it on under NC State Settings -> Feature Packs. They need to turn on Storytelling Feature Pack and make sure Category Callout Block is set to On.

Starting with version 4.19 of the NC State Theme, site administrators can require the Storytelling on-demand training before you can add this pack’s blocks. See all On Demand Trainings.

The block only works on pages that use the Homepage or Default News Homepage template. On other pages and on posts, it won’t appear in the block list. To change a page’s template, open the page’s settings in the right sidebar and choose a new template.

The category you choose needs at least one published story.

Adding the block

Open a page that uses the Homepage or Default News Homepage template.

Click the + (Add block) button.

Search for Category Callout.

Click the block to add it to your page.

Open the Settings panel in the right sidebar to choose your stories.

Choosing your stories

Pick your stories in the Feed Settings section of the Settings panel.

Setting

What it does

Source

Choose where the stories come from. You manage them under In the News Stories in the WordPress dashboard. You sort them with Publication Category.

Choose Publication Category under Source, then pick a category under Show Posts From.

What visitors see: links to the four newest In the News stories in that category, sorted by each story’s Publish Date. Each link goes to the original article, using the story’s URL. If a story doesn’t have a URL, the link goes to its page on your site instead.

Customizing the block

You edit the teaser and button right in the block. It starts with the category’s description. Click it in the block to change it. The web editor adds a Category Callout block, chooses Categories under Source and Research under Show Posts From. Rewrite it so it tells visitors why the stories are worth reading.

Set your teaser and button last. When you choose a different category, the block replaces the heading and teaser with the new category’s name and description.

Re-select the category after you rename it. The heading keeps the category’s name from when you chose it.
