{"id":40468,"date":"2026-09-25T20:18:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T00:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/?post_type=reference-article&#038;p=40468"},"modified":"2026-09-25T20:18:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-26T00:18:08","slug":"separator-block","status":"publish","type":"reference-article","link":"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/reference-article\/separator-block\/","title":{"rendered":"Separator Block"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use the Separator block when you want to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mark a shift in a long story.<\/strong> For example, between the section about a researcher&#8217;s early work and the section about their current project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Signal a change in time or place.<\/strong> For example, before a section that jumps ahead to &#8220;Five years later\u2026&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the next section needs a title, use a heading. If you want a photo or video to break up the story, use a block that works in Immersive posts, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/reference-article\/image-grid-block\/\">Image Grid Block<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/reference-article\/video-block\/\">Video Block<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/reference-article\/thumbnail-gallery-block\/\">Thumbnail Gallery Block<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use the Immersive template.<\/strong> The Separator block works only in posts that use the <strong>Immersive<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/products-and-tools\/nc-state-stories\/getting-started\/post-templates\/\">post template<\/a>, which comes with the NC State Premium Add-on. It doesn&#8217;t appear in the inserter for pages or for posts that use another template. You can also add it to a synced pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn on the Feature Pack.<\/strong> The Separator block is part of the <strong>Storytelling<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/products-and-tools\/nc-state-web-platform\/feature-packs\/\">Feature Pack<\/a>. If you can&#8217;t find it in the editor, ask your site administrator to turn it on under <strong>NC State Settings &gt; Feature Packs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complete the training.<\/strong> Starting with version 4.19 of the NC State Theme, site administrators can require the <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/get-support\/on-demand-workshops\/storytelling\/\">Storytelling on-demand training<\/a> before you can add this pack&#8217;s blocks. See all <a href=\"https:\/\/university-communications.ncsu.edu\/documentation\/get-support\/on-demand-workshops\/\">On Demand Trainings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding the block<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open a post that uses the <strong>Immersive<\/strong> template.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>+<\/strong> (Add block) button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search for <strong>Separator<\/strong>. You can also search for &#8220;divider&#8221; or &#8220;hr.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the block to add it to your post.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What visitors see:<\/strong> a short, thick, light gray line, centered on the page, with a little space above and below it. Every Separator on your site looks the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why can&#8217;t I find the Separator block?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two common reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your post doesn&#8217;t use the <strong>Immersive<\/strong> template. The block isn&#8217;t available on pages or on posts with other templates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Storytelling Feature Pack, or the Separator block within it, is turned off. Ask your site administrator to check <strong>NC State Settings &gt; Feature Packs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if I switch my post to a different template?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Separator block only works with the <strong>Immersive<\/strong> template. In other templates, the editor shows this notice in its place: &#8220;The Separator block is not supported by this template.
