Setting Up Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager helps you include and manage snippets of code on your site. These snippets are often used for analytics and advertising services. As more and more of these code snippets need to be added sites, Google Tag Manager provides a standardized way to organize and add these codes to your site without a developer having to be involved.

Configuration Steps

  1. Go to and login with your Google account.
  2. Click “Create Account.”
  3. Provide an “Account Name.” This will often be the title of your unit.
  4. Provide a “Container Name.” This will often be the URL of your website.
  5. Choose “Web” as the “Target platform” type.
  6. After clicking “Save,” you will be presented with a license agreement.
  7. After accepting the license agreement, you will see a pop-up with several code snippets. You can close that pop-up without saving the code.
  8. Towards the top of the page, you should see a code ID that begins with “GTM-XXXXXXX”. This code is to the left of the blue “Submit” button.
  9. Copy the GTM-XXXXXXX code. It will be pasted into the back-end of your site.
  10. Within the back-end of your site, go to Settings -> Google Tag Manager. Paste the GTM-XXXXXXX code into the “Google Tag Manager ID” field and click “Save.”
  11. Google Tag Manager is now configured on your site.
