Legacy Functionality
As the NC State Theme evolves, old functionality may be replaced with new features. An overview of these changes and migration steps is below.
Overview
A key tenet of the NC State Theme is that content maintainers will not need to manually manipulate content due to theme upgrades.
Although every effort is made to gracefully upgrade content during major theme feature changes, sometimes there degradations in how content appears may be necessary. In these scenarios the content will not look broken on the front-end, but it also might not look as polished as possible.
Migration Steps
The NC State Theme includes a Legacy Functionality Audit tool available within a site’s Dashboard by going to NC State Settings -> NC State Theme -> Legacy Functionality Audit.
This tool will show which pages and posts include outdated functionality. It will also give an overview of the change and what steps a content maintainer could perform to optimize the content’s appearance.
Legacy Functionality
Below is a running log of legacy functionality.
- Giving Form Block
- Added November 2024
- The Giving Form block has been replaced by the Button Spotlight block.
- This change was part of University Advancement’s CRM modernization project and launch of Lobo. A new online giving system is being used, and the block transition was made to account for these changes.
- Users may want to replace the block to use Button Spotlight block and update URL to link to a specific fund rather than the general give.ncsu.edu form.
- iModules Links
- Added February 26, 2025
- As part of University Advancement’s CRM modernization project, the online giving system has shifted away from iModules. Old iModules giving URLs will continue to redirect until June 30, 2025. This search will find instances of these old URLs so that they can be updated with a new GiveCampus URL.
- Giving Form Shortcode
- Added February 26, 2025
- A giving form shortcode was used prior to the launch of v3 of the NC State Theme in 2020. Some old news posts still include this shortcode.
- These shortcodes are currently being suppressed from displaying on a post’s front-end, but they should be removed (or optionally replaced) for long-term future compatibility.
- Floating Spotlight Box Block
- In v4.10 the Floating Spotlight Box block was removed with the same functionality added to the Fancy Paragraph block.
- The Floating Spotlight Box block will automatically transform into the Fancy Paragraph block when a content maintainer saves a page with a Floating Spotlight Box block. There may be a degraded display for the spotlight and wrapping paragraph copy until a page save is made.
- Floating Fact Block
- In v4.10 the Floating Fact block was removed with the same functionality added to the Fancy Paragraph block.
- The Floating Fact block will automatically transform into the Fancy Paragraph block when a content maintainer saves a page with a Floating Fact block. There may be a degraded display for the fact and wrapping paragraph copy until a page save is made.
- Image Block
- As of v 4.10, images within pages can no longer be floated to the right.
- Images that have been floated to the right will be migrated into the Fancy Paragraph block when a content maintainer saves a page.
