Heading Structure Example

This page has intentional heading mistakes. Use it with the Heading Structure task in the Base training.

This is a practice page. The fictional sample content below has three heading mistakes on purpose. Open the Base training’s Heading Structure task, find each mistake, and then check your answers in the answer key at the bottom of the page.

Thinking about visiting the Example Department? Here’s what you need to know before you arrive, from booking a tour to finding a place to park.

Plan Your Visit

Department tours run on weekdays and start in our main office. Each tour takes about an hour and includes our labs and student spaces.

Tours fill up fast, so book yours at least two weeks ahead!

Space on each tour is limited. Groups of 10 or more should contact our main office directly.

Parking

Visitors can park in any lot marked for visitors.

Visitor Lots

The closest visitor lot is a short walk from our building. Directions are included in your tour confirmation email.

Accessibility

If you need accessible parking or an accessible tour route, let us know when you book.

Show the answers

  1. The first heading is an H3. “Plan Your Visit” is a main section, so it should be an H2. Body headings start at H2, because the page title is the only H1.
  2. A heading level is skipped. “Visitor Lots” is an H4 directly under the H2 “Parking”. It should be an H3.
  3. A heading is used because of how it looks. “Tours fill up fast…” is a sentence, not a section title. Screen reader users who jump between headings hear it as a section of the page. Make it a regular paragraph, and use bold text if it needs attention.

The corrected outline:

  • H1: Heading Structure Example (page title)
  • H2: Plan Your Visit
  • H2: Parking
  • H3: Visitor Lots (under Parking)
  • H3: Accessibility (under Parking)
